The Mouse, the Cat, and the Circle That Holds Us All

Life, death, gratitude, and the sacred web of giving and taking—all witnessed through the eyes of a cat.

I watched the cat catch a mouse.

My first instinct was to shout. To clap my hands. To save the mouse.

But I had made a promise—to myself, to the ancestors, to the cat herself. I would not interfere. I would watch. I would learn.

The cat moved one paw, so slow I could barely see it. Another. Her tail twitched once, then went still.

And then she pounced.

It was over in a heartbeat. The cat held the mouse gently in her mouth. She didn't play with it. She didn't tear it apart. She carried it to the flat stone near the birdbath and she ate.

I looked away for a second. Then I looked back. If I was going to be a student, I had to see the whole lesson.

My Italian grandmother had a saying about moments like this.

She grew up in a village where cats guarded the olive groves. When a cat caught a mouse, the old women would whisper, "Il topo dona la sua vita." The mouse gives its life.

She told me it wasn't a sad thing. It was a gift. The cat took the gift, and because of that gift, the garden stayed healthy, the olives grew fat, and the bread tasted sweet.

One life feeding another. That was the old agreement.

The mouse eats the seeds. The cat eats the mouse. The cat's droppings feed the plants. The plants make more seeds.

Round and round.

The hunter is part of the circle, not outside it. The cat knew this. The mouse knew this, in its own tiny way.

I was the only one who had forgotten.

In Whiskers in the Web, I learn what the cat already knows: taking is not bad. Taking is necessary.

The question is how you take.

Do you take with gratitude? Do you take only what you need? Do you leave enough for the next creature in the loop?

The cat looked up at me with her ancient eyes. She was asking me those questions without a single sound.
